Brown
October 22, 2020
Alan J. Brown, age 89. Beloved husband of Gay, nee Kavanaugh; dear father of Richard (the late Susan) and the late Barbara Brown; dear step-father of Joseph (Nicole) Dunworth and Chris (Jennifer) Dunworth; loving grandfather of Robert (Karla) Brown, Calysta Dunworth, Breanna Dunworth, Audrey Dunworth, Christian Dunworth, and Liam Dunworth; great-grandfather of Isabella and Juliana Brown; fond brother of the late Roy, Sid, Bob, and Richard.
Alan was born in Providence, Rhode Island to the late Leroy and the late Mary, nee Pratt, Brown. From there he moved with family to San Francisco, Ca., Willets, Ca., then served in the Air Force in Korea during the conflict. He began his education in electronics and telecommunications in the military and continued that in college after discharge. He moved to Chicago from California working for Automatic Electric and then co-founded his own company in telecom, Wescom, Inc. After his company was sold in 1980 he maintained his spirit as an entrepreneur and has been instrumental in the founding or support of over a dozen small companies and ventures. He was generous with his time and support, and always gave his partners the autonomy to follow their dreams.
Alan was a devout Catholic and actively supported Catholic Charities and Assumption Church, his Parish for the past 25+ years. He was devoted to his children, Richard and Barbara, his stepsons Joe and Chris, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Alan and his wife Gay were avid sailors in both Chicago and California.
