Amelia Konopacki Lewis: A Life Celebrated
Amelia Konopacki Lewis, a cherished soul whose laughter and love knew no bounds, passed away at the age of 83. Born in Jackson, Michigan in 1940. She graduated from St. Mary's High School and later, attended Jackson College and the University of Michigan, where she met Hugh Lewis. Together, they had two beloved children, Rebecca and Huey. After residing in New Orleans during her early years in Louisiana, then Lafayette, she made Chicago her home for over 30 years. Amelia's life was a tapestry woven with devotion to God, an adventurous spirit, and an enduring love for her family and neighbors.
Amelia was a dedicated schoolteacher, accomplished magazine publisher, talented doll maker, and devoted volunteer for Catholic organizations, whose diverse passions enriched the lives of many.
Her adventurous spirit led her to travel extensively around the world. Amelia remained active, embracing activities like bicycling, running, and swimming until the last days of her life, a testament to her vibrant and energetic essence. Moreover, she carried the gift of music, playing the piano wherever she found one, leaving melodies that echoed the joy she brought to all she encountered.
A beacon of faith and generosity, Amelia was deeply committed to her parish at Holy Name Cathedral. Her Polish heritage, a proud part of her identity, shone through in vibrant stories and rich traditions that delighted her family and friends. Embracing the role of a grandmother with pure joy, she not only delighted in the presence of her seven grandchildren but also shared the richness of Polish traditions—baking cookies, painting eggs, exchanging heartfelt letters, and sharing endless stories that, infused with her contagious humor, will forever resonate in their hearts.
Amelia is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Rebecca Lewis Winchell; her siblings, Linn (Terry) Mitchell, Jan Calbert, and Marty (Mary) Konopacki; her grandchildren, Helen, Emily (Chris), Andrew (Kim), Mary Margaret, Hope, Meredith, and Ben; and great grandchildren, Mila, John Henry, and Ellis; and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was a pillar of strength and love in their lives.
Her journey on earth was preceded by her beloved son, Huey Lewis; her parents, Eugene and Helen Konopacki; and her brothers, Allen and Eugene Konopacki.
Amelia's legacy is one of laughter, love, and the courage to embrace each new adventure. As we remember her, we are reminded to live each day with the same passion and kindness she exemplified. Her spirit will continue to guide and inspire us.
