Barbara Hunt Robb Meehan's Obituary
Barbara Hunt Robb Meehan passed away on July 9, 2015 in Chicago after a short illness. She was 86. Born on June 16, 1929, to Charles Frances Hunt and Louise Charlotte Canning in Providence, Rhode Island, she graduated from Classical High School and received her B.A. in Mathematics from Brown University in 1951.
Along with her husband Richard Preston Robb, a fellow Brown graduate whom she married in 1952, she published Trailer Topics Magazine, the leading periodical of its day on mobile homes, recreational vehicles and travel trailers. After the magazine was sold in 1972, she served as an agent for the Internal Revenue Service, applying her prodigious math skills and vivacious personality to IRS outreach programs to taxpayers as a spokesman at meetings and on local television.
Throughout her life, she was actively involved in alumni activities with Brown University, including leadership roles with the Brown Club of Chicago and alumni interviews for prospective applicants. In 2001, she established the Richard P. Robb '51 and Barbara H. Robb '51 Scholarship Fund at Brown.
She had a lifelong love of the water, and for decades divided her time between her primary home in Longboat Key, Florida, and a summer home in Chicago. She was an avid bridge player and a member of the Women's Athletic Club in Chicago. In 2006, she married Joseph G. Meehan of Tampa, Florida.
She is survived by her two sons, Richard Hunt Robb (Rebecca Crown) of Winnetka, IL and Curtis Preston Robb (Kathy Bouton) of New York, NY; three grandsons, Alexander Crown Robb (Jenna Tjossem), Jason Hunt Robb, and Eric Strauss Robb; a granddaughter, Dorothy Canning Robb; a sister, Janet Hunt Crull of South Bend, Indiana; a nephew, a niece and four stepchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Richard Robb in 1990 and by her husband Joseph Meehan in 2012.
Visitation will take place on Sunday, July 12, 2015 from 5pm to 8pm at Michalik Funeral Home, 1056 W. Chicago Avenue, Chicago, IL, (312) 421-0936. Family and friends will gather Monday, July 13, 2015, for a funeral Mass at 9:30am at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 N. State St., Chicago, IL. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Brown University.
