Daniel R.
Schuman
February 24, 2021
Daniel R. Schuman. Loving father of Beth Schuman; cousin of many. Dan grew up in Berkeley, Illinois - - a little like "Mayberry". He lived on Maple Avenue with his parents August John (Gus) and Marie Felicia (Neen), and his little brother, Roger. He recalled the early years of Roger coming into his life as: "Who is this kid bothering me?" You see – Dan was already 7 years old when Roger was born and this kid was cramping his style! Alas, he let him hang out with him and of course they became the best of friends, sharing a very close bond all their lives. When Roger became ill, Dan cared lovingly for him through to his passing in 2018.
In his youth, Dan enjoyed playing ball in the fields behind the house with Roger, and many of his Larocca cousins, including Bob, Frank, Jim, Jerry, and "sis" Diana. He was so proud of his Berkeley background, looking back on those days with great fondness. He had said, "My childhood growing up in Berkeley was pretty near perfect."
Dan worked for over 30 years at M&M/Mars, enjoying a successful career as a Data Processing Manager. It was there where he met his future wife, Carolyn. Not long after their daughter Beth was born, they re-located to New Jersey for several years, eventually getting back to the Chicago area in the western suburbs. Always physically active, Dan became an avid golfer, participating in work leagues and golfing with friends. Later on, he turned to bicycle riding. He would often ride over 20 miles each day through the various bike trails of DuPage and Kane Counties. Dan was one of the nicest people you would ever meet – quite easy-going, never allowing himself to get ruffled by events, always smiling. In both big things and small, he would always put others ahead of himself, setting a wonderful example for those around him. Known for his dry sense of humor, he was quick-witted, eager to pounce with a pun or good jab. There was rarely a joke, double-entrendre, or reference you could make that he wouldn't get - - or that he hadn't already said! All of these qualities made him such fun to be with. He was blessed to enjoy a 28-year retirement, keeping up with his favorite shows, listening to classical music, going to the movies & Cubs games with Beth, visiting friends in and around St. Charles, and "hanging out" at the apartment office regaling them with stories and jokes. He loved his life. Dan was known in some circles of Beth's friends as "Dad Schuman" rather than "Dan Schuman". This is so fitting, as he was the quintessential dad in many ways.
