Denise M. Stauder, beloved Chicagoan, communications professional and journalist, educator, philanthropist, and champion of the arts and civic life, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2026, after a courageous battle with multiple health issues. She was 82.
A lifelong force of energy, intelligence, and independence, Denise lived much of her life along Michigan Avenue, embracing the culture, architecture, music, and spirit of the city she loved deeply. To know Denise was to know Chicago.
Denise built a strong professional career spanning education, journalism, marketing, events, and civic leadership. She spent many years with the Chicago Tribune where she held numerous editorial and marketing roles during the 1970s and 1980s including Assistant Editor of the Lifestyle Section, Special Events Coordinator, and Marketing Buyer for Tribune Company. Her work helped shape some of the Tribune’s most prominent public events, marketing programs, and civic partnerships. Known for her creativity, precision, and tireless work ethic, Denise was a respected figure in Chicago’s media and events communities.
Following her years at the Tribune, Denise continued her work in education and hospitality management at Northern Illinois University and Kendall College, mentoring students and helping develop continuing education and meeting management programs.
Beyond her professional accomplishments Denise was deeply committed to civic and cultural groups throughout Chicago. She served as Chair of the Board of the Respiratory Health Association of Chicago and dedicated decades of volunteer service to the organization. She was an active member of Old St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Chicago Symphony League and Women’s Association, First Friday Club of Chicago, and other groups throughout the city.
Denise was recognized for her professional and volunteer achievements including being named Planner of the Year by the Meeting Professionals International Chicago Chapter and receiving the Herbert C. DeYoung Medal from the Respiratory Health Association.
She was a lifelong learner and earned a bachelor’s degree from Maryville College of the Sacred Heart in St. Louis and a master’s degree in political science and urban studies from St. Louis University.
Denise will be remembered for her generosity, determination, sharp wit, endless curiosity, and ability to connect people. Most of all, she will be remembered for the immense loyalty, style, humor, and grace she brought to her love of family, friends, city, and community.
A visitation will be held Friday, May 22, 2026, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at Old St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 700 W. Adams Street, Chicago, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM. and a reception. Interment will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in River Grove.
Old St. Patrick's Church parking is available in the building located at 625 West Adams Street, Chicago, Illinois 60661 (entrance is on Des Plaines Street - 1/2 block South of the Church on the East side of the Des Plaines Street).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Old St. Patrick’s Church, or the Respiratory Health Association of Chicago.
