Obituary

Dorothy Louise Conger, a longtime Chicago resident, died peacefully in her home on Monday, May 6th. Born on Valentine's Day in Ottumwa, Iowa, she moved to Chicago at the age of eighteen. Mrs. Conger devoted over 70 years to many of Chicago's charity organizations. She was a founding member of the Women's Board of the Arthritis Association, serving twice as president. She was also an original member of the Chicago Hearing Association. Other boards included Northwestern Settlement – Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, La Rabida Children's Hospital, St. Vincent's Orphanage and Reading for the Blind. She was a member of the University of Chicago Cancer Foundation Board at the time of her death.

During her lifetime, Mrs. Conger was a lover of fashion, travel, politics and the arts. She read the Chicago Tribune without fail and never missed a column by John Kass. One of her daily routines was sending clippings from the Tribune to members of her family. When appearing in public, always impeccably dressed and coiffed, her beautiful hats were de rigueur. She was a stickler for manners and did not hesitate to correct her family. With her charming sense of humor and zest for life, she was an inspiration to all.

Mrs. Conger was married three times. Her first husband, William Jay Frazier, was an executive at Fostoria Glass Company. Her second husband, Dr. Raymond William McNealy, was Chief Surgeon and Chief of Staff of Wesley Memorial Hospital and Professor of Surgery at Northwestern Medical School. Her third husband, Robert Alan Conger, was Chief Executive Officer of Encyclopedia Britannica and Chairman of Compton Encyclopedia.

Mrs. Conger was a regular attendee of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Lyric Opera Guild at its inception. She was a member of the Antiquarian Society of the Art Institute and the Costume Council of the Chicago Historical Society.

Mrs. Conger is survived by her three sons. William J. Frazier, Jr. and his wife Jane of Darien, CT, Douglas Lee Frazier and his wife Gloria of Hinsdale, IL, Roderick Marshall McNealy and his wife Patricia of Somerville, NJ, and six grandchildren: Susan Frazier Healey and her husband Brendan, Ann Frazier Straub and her husband Christopher, Jay Frazier, Mary McNealy Czarnecki and her husband Christopher, Rebecca Ann McNealy, and Daniel Lawrence Frazier. She is also survived by five great grandsons: Liam Brendan Healey, Duncan Frazier Healey, Christopher James Straub, Nicholas Jay Straub, and Emmett Nathan Czarnecki. She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Gallagher.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, May 13th, at 10 am, in the Chapel at Holy Name Cathedral, 30 E. Superior, Chicago, IL 60611. Entombment at Memorial Park Cemetery, Skokie, IL. For further info 312-421-0936.
