Obituary

On Sunday, May 17, 2020, John Campbell, beloved husband, father of four children (David, Tom, Susan, and Beth), father-in-law to two daughters-in-law (Karen and Ronda), grandfather to three grandchildren (Sara, Megan, and Jack), and to many granddogs over the years (including Champ, Buster, Mac, and Layla), passed away peacefully with family by his side at the age of 86.

John was born on October 3, 1933 in Mason City, IA to David and Loretta (Kelsh) Campbell. He was the youngest of eight children. He attended Marquette University where he met the love of his life, Carolyn, and they married in 1960. Together they raised four children.

He received his bachelor's degree in accounting from Marquette in 1960, and after 18 years working for others, he started his own accounting business in 1978. He took great pride in the fact that his sons later took over the business, and grew it to even greater success.

John was a risk taker, an entrepreneur, an Air Force veteran, a two time cancer survivor, a gambler, a golfer, a failed guitar player, a story teller, and a man with many nicknames (Johnny, Chief, Mr. C, Big John, Pop, etc.). And earlier in life a bowler, a ping pong player, a little league baseball coach, a pool player, a chess teacher, a Xenon pinball machine player, and a cheerleader for his children's sporting pursuits. He truly enjoyed simple pleasures of life—family, friendship, reading, playing cards, sudoku, the Chicago Cubs, and a filled-to-the-rim glass of chardonnay. John was a prince, and a fighter who lived 28 lives during his time on earth. He built a life for his wife and family that included great adventures of travel, a self-built craps table in his basement, time spent at the racetrack, summers in Lake Mills, WI, winters in Cape Canaveral, FL, a move to a Chicago high rise after spending 41 years in Naperville, and much laughter.

John was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and three brothers. He is survived by his wife Carolyn, four children, two daughters-in-law, three grandchildren, his sister Mary, his brothers- and sisters-in-law, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Interment private. A memorial mass will be held at a later date in Chicago. Please revisit Michalik Funeral Home website for updated details in the coming months.

His was a life well lived. We ask everyone who remembers him to celebrate John's life in their own way, raising a glass of their favorite drink in his memory would be quite appropriate.

We were often gifted the kindness of strangers as we moved with John through life in his final chapters. In lieu of flowers we ask that you do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for someone in his name. For those who insist on making a donation in John's name, please direct your gift to Assumption Church Illinois Street ( assumption-chgo.org ), or Marquette University ( marquette.edu ).
