John Joseph
Daly
October 24, 2024
John Joseph Daly, 80, a longtime resident of Chicago, died of cardiac arrest at St. Joseph Hospital on October 24, 2024. Born in 1944 to John Joseph Daly and his wife, Catherine (née Thoman) in New York City, John grew up in Great Neck and graduated from St. Mary's High School in Manhasset. While there, he distinguished himself academically as well as athletically as a track star. He graduated from Temple University with a degree in Psychology, later earning advanced degrees from the University of Chicago—including a Ph.D. in Psychology.
Gifted with a kind heart and a great desire to help others, John worked for many years as a psychologist helping adolescents and young people. Later in his career, he put his formidable analytical and statistical skills to work when he became a financial analyst for Charles Scwab, where John helped older people choose and manage their retirement plans.
Academically gifted and intellectually curious, John was a voracious reader, a lover of the Great Books, and an engaging conversationalist who delighted in classical music, as well as in philosophic, religious, and political discussions. In his youth, he enjoyed traveling, hiking, and sailing—even winning trophies for his prowess. A lifelong Catholic, John loved God, the United States, and his family. An avid Bears fan, he also enjoyed following college football and basketball. A gentleman to the end, he had the highest standards of integrity, and demonstrated courage and uncomplaining fortitude--especially when his health declined in recent years.
John was predeceased by his parents and is survived by his cousins, Carson and Maura Daly, and by his lifelong, devoted friends, Chris and Christine Frank, who were wonderful to him—especially during the sicknesses leading up to his death.
