Obituary

Dr. John Karrat, 82, passed away on November 11, 2024, while a patient at the Northwestern University Hospital. John was predeceased by his parents Nayef and Minnie Karrat. He was born and raised in Utica, NY. He graduated from St. Francis De Sales High School then attended the University of Buffalo. After graduating from college, he attained his medical degree from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (CCOM).

John was a talented classical pianist. He was 1st runner up in a Coca Cola National Talent Competition, played on stage at New York's Carnegie Hall and opened for Danny Thomas during his national St. Jude fundraising show.

John was an extremely qualified physician. After a successful private practice, John became the Director of the Residency program at CCOM in the newly created Department of Family Medicine. His skill, compassion and teaching ability are instilled in all the many residents he trained.

Family, friends and religion have guided John throughout his life. He impressed all with his strong religious beliefs and his care and concern for the poor and needy. John was generous with his time, knowledge and resources. He was always willing to help, guide and pray with and for friends and strangers alike. He will be missed by all who knew him and who have been blessed to share in his leadership, love and caring.

John is survived by his brothers Joseph and Anthony, his sister Adele Habeeb and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and close friends.

Family and friends will meet Monday, November 18, 2024, at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 North State Street, Chicago, Illinois 60654 for a 9:30 a.m. Visitation followed by a 10:30 a.m. Funeral Mass. Free parking for Holy Name Cathedral is available at 14 West Superior Street (between Dearborn Street and State Street). Please use any nonreserved parking space on Lower Level One (LL1) or Lower Level Two (LL2). Entombment will follow at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines, Illinois.
