Joseph Steele Doherty passed away on June 19 in Chicago. He was born in Washington, Pennsylvania, to Dr Joseph and Louise Doherty and grew up in Latrobe.  He graduated from Latrobe High School, where he was a commencement speaker and the captain of the golf team.  Joe earned a degree in mathematics from Franklin and Marshall College of Lancaster, Pennsylvania and received an MBA degree from Harvard University. After military service, Joe moved to Chicago where he played key roles in the establishment of the Chicago Board Options Exchange, including as Corporate Secretary at its founding in 1972 and, later, as a member of the Board of Directors.  After a number of years as a member and independent trader at the CBOE, Joe joined the derivatives trading firm of O'Connor and Associates, becoming a partner in 1988. Following that firm's acquisition by Swiss Bank Corporation, Joe held positions as a Managing Director with SBC in Chicago; Basel, Switzerland; and London. He retired from the firm in 2002.

Joe is survived by his wife, Gretchen, of Chicago; two brothers; Jack Doherty of Conyers, Georgia, and his son Rob; and Tim (Mercy) Doherty of Ocala, Florida, and their sons Michael and Andrew; in-laws Kristin and Kent Powley, Ingrid and Michael Merkatoris, Karin and Paul Hoagland; and six nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Patricia Doherty McNeely.

Funeral services will be private. Burial will be in Allouez Cemetery in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
