Joseph B. Kroll, 72, died June 30, 2018, at Seasons Hospice in MacNeal Hospital, Berwyn, Illinois.
He was born in Chicago on May 1, 1946, the oldest child of the late Joseph L. and Cecilia M.
(née Nycz) Kroll.
Joseph graduated from St. Wenceslaus Elementary School, Archbishop Weber High School and the Illinois Institute of Technology; he later earned an MBA from DePaul University. He taught math at high schools including Weber, Gordon Tech (now DePaul College Prep), Joliet Central, Holy Trinity and St. Sebastian. He then became a computer programmer, banker and systems analyst. But he never really stopped teaching math, to the academic benefit of his nieces and nephews.
J.B. is survived by his dear and patient wife of 25 years, Patricia (Patt, née Wright); his sister, Catherine Alterio; and his brothers Stanley (Claudia) and John (Kathryn), as well as nieces, nephews and others whom he helped and entertained with his financial acumen, wide knowledge and well-timed raised eyebrows.
He loved his wife, music of many kinds, Chicago hot dogs and beef sandwiches, and playful writing. At Weber he wrote for the school paper, and remained inordinately proud of a parody in which he named a miner "A.U. Digger." Au, of course, is the chemical symbol for gold.
When Joe's youngest brother married while Joseph, then in his 40s, was still single, his father remarked that his oldest son would "never be in double harness." But Joseph met Patt at work, married and embraced a whole new family of loved ones (and a continual source of delicious cake tops from Patt's mother). J.B. and Patt lived in Oak Park, conveniently close to Buona Beef and Gina's Italian Ice.
