Katherine Royston
Wos
February 17, 2025
Kathy passed away peacefully on February 17, 2025, at the age of 83.
Kathy was born in 1942, to Mary and Herbert Royston. She is predeceased in death by her parents Herb and Mary as well as her brother Herbie and husband Ron Wos. She is survived by her son Matt, brothers Le and Bill, nieces Christina, Anne Marie, Heather and nephew Ryan.
Kathy was committed to integration and social justice and after marriage raised her son Matt in Bronzeville and the South Loop. She and Ron moved to South Commons then Prairie Shores in the 1970's. In the early '80s, they were urban pioneers as they settled in Dearborn Park. At a time when many couples moved to the suburbs after marriage, Kathy and Ron moved closer to the inner city to live in a diverse environment.
Kathy was a much beloved babysitter to many families. She rarely raised her voice and had incredible patience with everyone.
She worked for Michael Reese Hospital from 1977-1999 working with cancer patients and enjoyed long-term friendships with her work family. She took sign language and classes in Chinese at the City Colleges of Chicago. She could always be found reading several books at once.
Kathy and Ron volunteered for the St. James Parish and were longtime contributors to its school and parish pantry. After moving to the South Loop, they attended Old St Mary's and assisted with plans to develop a new church building in 2002. This structure was the first new church constructed in Chicago in over half a century and is a model of integrated worship.
Kathy attended Rosary College (now Dominican University) on a scholarship, working in the bookstore to pay for her education. She majored in biology and loved helping people wherever she could. She always looked fondly at her years as a Rosary student.
Kathy lived a simple and gentle life of service. Throughout her life, she exemplified humility and resourcefulness. She had a wholehearted commitment to making the world a better place and will be sorely missed.
