Obituary

Mary Joan Range, nee Stegman, age 87, passed away peacefully in her sleep early on Saturday, September 21, 2019. Mary Joan was the beloved wife of the late Charles L. Range, MD. She was the beloved mother of Margaret Mary (T. Mark Maybell), Mary Grace, Susan Mary, Elizabeth Mary (Terrence Kiely), Anne Mary (Craig "Buck" Barclay), Benjamin James, and the late Charles Laurence (Rebecca Burton). She was known as Grandma Mary Joan to her 20 grandchildren including: Emily Range, Laura Range, Charlie B. Range, Mary Louise Range, Annie Maybell Kaiser, Graham Maybell, Charlie Maybell, Grace Maybell, Grace Singerman Magnus, Max Singerman, Miles Singerman, Austin Miller, Haley Miller, Will Kiely, Jack Kiely, Emma Barclay, Spencer Barclay, Benjie Barclay, Carson Range and Anna Range. Her rather large family also included being Grandmother-in-law to Erik, Heather, Taylor and Kerri and, most recently, Great-grandmother to Evelyn. Mary Joan was the loving daughter of the late Benjamin and Grace Stegman. She worshipped her only brother the late Kenneth Stegman, MD and his late wife Mary Ruth Stegman. She was a friend of many, including in-laws & outlaws.

Mary Joan was a volunteer in her community including a Founding Member of the Beverly Film Society and Beverly Montessori School. Additionally, she was a Junior Great Books Leader in Beverly as well as a Grade School Picture Lady in Palos Park. She also was a Member of the Palos Park Service League and Palos Park Library Board. When she and her husband Charlie moved downtown, she became a docent at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Mary Joan was a scholar and an intellect. She received a full scholarship to St. Xavier University and pursued graduate studies at Chicago's fine academic institutions including University of Chicago, DePaul and Loyola. She was an incredible force and a beauty who was well known for her wit and fashion (including a lifelong love of denim skirts). Mary Joan loved living in the city of Chicago and leaves a fabulous legacy.

The Range Family is grateful to all who loved and cared for her over her long life, especially the staff at The Clare where she resided for the past 6 years.

Visitation Friday, September 27, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 North State Street, Chicago, Illinois 60610 until the time of the Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. Interment at Homewood Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 600 Ridge Road, Homewood, Illinois 60430.
