Obituary

Peter J. Phillips, 62, died peacefully at home in Chicago on June 26, 2022, after a long illness.  Peter was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on March 8, 1960, and attended Boston Latin School and Columbia University. He met the love of his life, Victoria Ruder, while they were both living in Boston. They later moved to Tucson, Arizona, before finally settling in Tory's hometown of Chicago in 1992.

Peter had a long career as a patent law clerk at Leydig, Voit & Mayer in Chicago. He was also an accomplished artist whose paintings reflect moments of calm amid the chaos of everyday life.

Peter and Tory shared a loving life filled with laughter, travel, and epic dinner parties. His devotion to her was the stuff of legends. He retired to care full-time for his wife in 2012.

Peter found inspiration and fulfillment in art of all kinds, in the adventure of travel, and in the tribulations and occasional triumphs of the Chicago Cubs. He had visited five continents and, even as he faced terminal illness, Peter was planning a walking tour of South Korea and retirement on the Adriatic coast of Croatia.

Peter was predeceased by his wife Victoria C. Ruder in 2018 and his father William F. Phillips. He is survived by his mother, Joan (Wells) Phillips, of Foxboro, Massachusetts; his identical twin brother Paul and wife Rebecca Noel of Plymouth, New Hampshire; his sisters Susan Johnson of Hyde Park, Massachusetts, and Kathleen O'Connell and husband Robert of Plainville, Massachusetts; his sisters-in-law Julia San Fratello and husband Charles of Chicago, and Kit Billingsley and husband Paul of Chicago; his brothers-in-law David Ruder of New York, New York, and John Ruder and his wife Kate of Boulder, Colorado. Peter was a loving uncle to Hayley Johnson, Joseph DiDonato, Clarity Phillips, Tobias Phillips, Jack Ruder, Ashley Ruder, Nathalie San Fratello, Lionel Billingsley, Jasper Billingsley, Wes Ruder, and Quinn Ruder. He also leaves his former mother-in-law Susan Ruder, many Wells Family cousins, his beloved friend Noel Barker, and other friends and family members too numerous to mention.
