Dr. Santosh (Toshi) Kansal (Sood) left us on November 21, 2020 after a long and wonderful life, filled with many accomplishments, both personal and professional. Dr. Kansal was a Cardiologist with the University of Alabama in Birmingham and, later, with her own private practice. She leaves behind her dear husband Dr. Prakash Kansal, her beloved daughter, Preeti Kansal-Manadan (Augustine Manadan), and cherished grandchildren, Jay, Leena and Neil Manadan. She is also survived by her respected sister, Dr. Saroj Kapur and her beloved brother Chander Mohindra. Dr. Santosh Kansal also had a large family of nieces and nephews who knew her fondly as Toshi.

Toshi was born Santosh Sood in Pakpattan, India, in 1930. She was the fourth child of a large family, and became a refugee after the 1947 partition of India during British independence. After the family settled down in Delhi, she joined Lady Hardinge Medical College, where she received an MD in Cardiology, one of the few women to reach this milestone at the time. Toshi made many independent and brave choices, including her decision to travel on her own for work from India to Cleveland, Ohio to pursue further training in Cardiology. There, she met Prakash Kansal, a fellow physician and they were married in India.

Her entire family enjoyed her light-hearted banter and fun-loving disposition. She and Prakash also provided tremendous support to many friends and family both socially and when advanced medical care was needed at UAB. She was loved by many and will be missed by all of us.
