Obituary

Dr. Sarmed George Elias MD passed away at Northwestern Memorial Hospital on November 1, 2023, with his loving wife, Elizabeth, by his side.

Sarmed was granted grace to pass peacefully on All Saint's Day, a day in the Catholic faith that honors and celebrates all the church saints. A devout Catholic, Sarmed was called home by Jesus Christ, whom he affectionately called his favorite person in the universe.

A renowned orthopedic surgeon, Sarmed completed his studies at the University of Baghdad College of Medicine and the University of London. He completed his residency at the University of Illinois, Metropolitan Group of Hospitals, Chicago, IL PGY2 followed by a four-year orthopedic surgery residency at the Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine, Norfolk, VA. Combined Naval Civilian Program covering Orthopedic Trauma at 5 hospitals, including Portsmouth Naval.

Sarmed was awarded Post Board Fellowships in polytrauma, pediatric orthopedic, adult reconstructive and total joint replacement, endoscopic spine surgery and minimally invasive spinal management.

Dr. Elias built extensive trauma experience working with the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, Level 1 Trauma, and served as Lieutenant 6th Armored Mountain Division. During his medical career, Dr. Elias also worked as an emergency room physician at the University of London and the University of Southampton as Lord Mayor Treloar Reginal Musculo-Skeletal Service for Congenital Deformities.

For over 30 years, Sarmed treated patients in Illinois and successfully performed thousands of specialized orthopedic surgeries. His patients will miss his expertise and his personal touch, which included talking them through their conditions and treatment options and listening to them.

A life-long learner and dedicated doctor, Sarmed was always thinking of ways to advance the orthopedic field of medicine. So much so, that he was the inventor of two orthopedic utility patents, which have been surgically implanted in many patients.

Sarmed was a Renaissance man with many talents, including singing, playing piano and displaying a comfortable confidence with public speaking. He had a great love for classical music and opera, and one of his favorite pass times was going to concerts with his wife.

He was a deeply intelligent man, who loved to have stimulated conversations and could discuss any topic. He was known for wisely proclaiming that he had a young mind because he was always reading and studying.

A patriotic man, Sarmed held the upmost respect for military members and veterans. After the horrible September 11, 2001 attacks, Sarmed found himself walking past a jewelry store with beautiful American flag pins in the window.

But when he stepped inside the store to buy a pin, he found something he'd treasure even more: his future wife, Elizabeth.

Sarmed always looked after, supported and encouraged Elizabeth. With her, he was happy, complete and found a partner who appreciated his sense of humor. He was her rock.

They married December 22, 2007, and from that moment he lovingly joked that a little shrimp is running his life. Whenever he joked, Sarmed would tell Elizabeth that she'll miss him, and she does beyond imagination.

Sarmed is survived by his wife Elizabeth Elias; his sisters Maysoon, Mia, and Nadia; and his nephew Dr. Ed Kerr MD. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Agnes; brother-in-law Jarek; nephew Mathew; and nieces Magdalena and Ana. He is preceded in death by his parents Francoise Mikhail Elias and George H. Elias.
